It was Tuesday morning at the Maple Street Animal Shelter, and the annual adoption fair was in full swing. On the reception desk sat a box labeled DONATIONS, collecting money for new kennel blankets. A big ADOPT banner hung over the reception desk. Beside the desk, on his favorite rug, lay Biscuit, the shelter beagle.
Everybody at the shelter knew the rule about Biscuit: he barks at strangers, and he never barks at people he knows. His bark is loud enough to rattle the kennel doors down the hall.
At ten-oh-five, a delivery driver arrived with a load of dog food. Biscuit barked once, loud and sharp. The driver dropped off the food and left at ten-ten with an empty dolly.
At ten-thirty, Rita, a longtime volunteer, counted the donation box. One hundred and eighty dollars. Then she headed down the hall to clean the kennels with Luis, another volunteer. Marcus, a new volunteer on his very first day, was supposed to watch the reception desk.
At ten-fifty, Rita came back to the desk and stopped cold. The donation box was gone.
Three people had been in or around the building, plus the driver. Rita asked each of them where they’d been.
Marcus said, “I was at the reception desk the whole time. I never left. I didn’t see anyone take it.”
But the staff down the hall had heard no barking at all between ten-thirty and ten-fifty. Biscuit had never met Marcus before today. If Marcus had really been standing at the reception desk, right next to Biscuit, for twenty minutes, Biscuit would have barked at the stranger beside him. Marcus turned red and admitted the truth: he had been napping in his car the whole time, too embarrassed to say so. He never went near the box.
Rita said, “I was cleaning the kennels with Luis the whole time.” Luis nodded. “She was right beside me. We never left the kennel hall.”
Priya, a regular visitor who comes every week with treats for Biscuit, said, “I got here at ten-forty-five and went straight to the garden. I never even came inside.” The garden has its own side gate, so that was possible. Then Priya held up her phone. “Look at this cute photo I took of Biscuit!”
The photo showed Biscuit sitting under the big ADOPT banner. But the ADOPT banner hangs over the reception desk — there is no banner in the garden. The photo could only have been taken inside, at the reception desk.
Rita looked at Priya. “Priya, if you never came inside, how did you take this photo under the reception banner?”

You solved the mystery!
Priya took the money. The delivery driver is cleared: he left at ten-ten, and the box was still full at ten-thirty. Marcus is cleared too: Biscuit barks at strangers, and the hall heard no barking, so Marcus never went near the box — he was asleep in his car. Rita is cleared: Luis was beside her in the kennels the whole time. That leaves Priya, the one person Biscuit knows well enough not to bark at, standing at the reception desk during the window — proven by her own photo, taken under the banner that hangs only over the reception desk, even though she said she never came inside.

Not quite!
While everyone argues, Priya slips out the side gate with the donation box — and Biscuit is left guarding an empty spot on the rug, wondering where the kennel-blanket money went.
